Dragon Boat Festival

Jun 5th 2008, 04:27 PM 0 raters

5th day of the 5th lunar month

The day after tomorrow is Chinese Traditional Dragon Boat Festival.

Do you wanna know something about it ?

Qu Yuan
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival,

is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to

the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years,

the festival has been marked by eating

zong zi (glutinous ricewrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo

or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.

The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces

where there are many rivers and lakes.

This regattacommemorates the death of Qu Yuan ,

an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide

by drowning himself in a river.

Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during the Warring States Period (475-221BC) He was upright, loyal and highly esteemed for his wise counsel

that brought peace and prosperity to the state.

However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified Qu,

he was disgraced and dismissed from office.

Realizing that the country was now in the hands of evil and

corrupt officials, Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the

Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month.

Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save him

but were unable to even recover his body.

Thereafter, the state declined and was eventually

conquered by the State of Qin.

The people of Chu who mourned the death of
Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost
every year on the fifth day of the fifth month.
But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and
told the mourners that a huge reptile in the river
had stolen the rice. The spirit then advised them to
wrap the rice in silk and bind it with five
different-colored threads before tossing it
into the river.

During the Duanwu Festival, a glutinous rice
pudding called zong zi is eaten to symbolize
the rice offerings to Qu. Ingredients such as beans,
lotus seeds, chestnuts, pork fat and the golden yolk
of a salted duck egg are often added to the glutinous rice.
The pudding is then wrapped with bamboo leaves,
bound with a kind of raffia and boiled in salt water for hours.

The dragon-boat races symbolize the many attempts
to rescue and recover Qus body.
A typical dragon boat ranges from 50-100 feet in length,
with a beam of about 5.5 feet,
accommodating two paddlers seated side by side.

A wooden dragon head is attached at the bow,
and a dragon tail at the stern.
A banner hoisted on a pole is also fastened at the stern

and the hull is decorated with red, green and blue scales edged in gold.
In the center of the boat is a canopied shrine behind which the drummers,
gong beaters and cymbal players are seated to set the pace for the paddlers.

There are also men positioned at the bow to set off firecrackers,
toss rice into the water and pretend to be looking for Qu.
All of the noise and pageantry creates an atmosphere of
gaiety and excitement for the participants and spectators alike.
The races are held among different clans, villages and organizations,
and the winners are awarded medals, banners, jugs of wine and festive meals.

CHINA EARTHQUAKE

May 27th 2008, 05:13 PM 0 raters

As aftershocks continue to strike, including dual tremors that collapsed thousands of homes on Tuesday May 27, Mercy Corps is on the ground assisting earthquake survivors in China's Sichuan Province. We have procured and delivered critical supplies — such as water, noodles, milk and shelter items — to displaced families who have lost their homes. We are now coordinating plans for longer-term recovery and reconstruction, and are especially focused on education, counseling and activities for youth.

Today, a Mercy Corps-coordinated shipment containing nearly three tons of medical supplies for survivors and affected communities arrived in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. This effort, called "Flight of Hope," was made possible by collaboration with Boeing, Shenzen Airlines and Medical Teams International. Upon the cargo's arrival, these supplies were transferred to local health authorities for usage at hospitals and temporary health facilities around the region.

You can give now to support relief efforts for a disastrous situation that has claimed thousands of lives and left millions homeless.

The 7.9 magnitude tremor that struck Sichuan Province on May 12 is estimated to have killed at least 67,000 people — and that toll has kept rising. In cities near the earthquake's epicenter, rescue crews continue to sift through the rubble of collapsed buildings in search of approximately 21,000 people who are still missing.

The Chinese government estimates that at least 436,000 homes have been destroyed, and there reports that about five million people are homeless.

Mercy Corps, through its local partners All China Youth Federation (ACYF) and China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) , is mounting an emergency response for survivors. Together, we have procured critical supplies such as food, water, clothing and shelter supplies and delivered them to affected families. We have deployed experienced staff members from our Beijing and U.S. headquarters offices to help coordinate efforts.

In addition, our team is finalizing plans for longer-term programming with our local partners. There are great needs for temporary schools, counseling and other activities for children in earthquake-shattered rural areas.

To serve these needs, we will be helping children and youth recover through our Comfort For Kids and Moving Forward Sports for Youth programs. We are translating "My Earthquake Story" — a variation on the "My Hurricane Story" workbook that was widely used in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina — into Mandarin Chinese and adapting it specifically for children in Sichuan Province. Senior-level psychologists, including the Chinese American Psychoanalytic Alliance (CAPA), are working with Mercy Corps on the adaptations, translations and training for local teachers and other caregivers. This workbook is appropriate for children of all ages, from toddlers through older youth. Thousands of copies will be distributed as part of the psychosocial program that we're planning to initiate in affected areas.

Two additional staff members are headed to China to help begin and implement psychosocial activities. Through its Comfort for Kids methodology — developed with Bright Horizons, the renowned early childhood education company — Mercy Corps has worked with post-trauma children around the world in trying to help them regain some sense of normalcy.

Mercy Corps has been assisting families and vulnerable communities in China since 2001. One of our programs — Project GLOW, supported by the Nike Foundation — is centered in Sichuan Province, the epicenter of the earthquake. We have confirmed that our staff and partners in the area are safe.

National death toll rises to 14,866 two days after quake

May 14th 2008, 05:51 PM 0 raters

Rescuers were Tuesday night racing against time to find survivors a day after the strongest quake to hit China in 32 years jolted southwestern Sichuan province, demolishing buildings and trapping tens of thousands beneath the rubble.

Ordered by the General Staff of the PLA headquarters, up to 600 People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops entered Wenchuan county on foot, the epicenter, late Tuesday and pulled more than 1,000 people from debris, according to the disaster relief headquarters of the Chengdu Military Command. It was not clear how many had survived. The county city is estimated to have 110,000 permanent and migrant residents.

Earlier reports from Sichuan said only about 2,300 people of a town in the hardest hit county, named Yingxiu, out of a total population of 10,000, were known to have survived.

The confirmed national death toll reached 14,866 by 2 pm Wednesday, nearly all of them in Sichuan, according to the temporary disaster relief headquarters headed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Dujiangyan, to oversee the rescue work hours after the quake.

Another 9,404 were buried in debris, 7,841 were missing and 26,206 people were injured, according to the headquarters.

"We will try our best to send milk powder to parents and ensure children do not go hungry," Wen said on Tuesday after learning that some infants were running short of food and many people needed drinking water and tents.

Wen was visiting cities worst hit by the quake, including Dujiangyan, Deyang and Mianzhu.

He said the rescue work had entered a crucial stage and asked people to remain calm, confident and united as he inspected a factory in Mianzhu and urged officials to ensure rapid distribution of food.

He comforted a crying child, saying, "Don't cry. Food will be sent in a short time. Biscuits and milk powder will be sent in a short time."

He told villagers: "I know some of your family and friends have died. We are deeply saddened. Some people are still trapped. We will do our utmost to rescue them."

The premier ordered that all rocks and mudslides blocking roads to the epicenter be cleared by midnight.

"People are trapped in the debris; we must seize every second," he told an emergency meeting.

Xia Guofu, Sichuan provincial military commander, led a team of more than 300 soldiers into Wenchuan and more troops were expected imminently, said Ye Wanyong, political commissar of the command.

Rescuers who arrived at Yingxiu Town of Wenchuan on foot Tuesday afternoon said the town was inaccessible by road.

The soldiers reported more than 70 percent of the roads in the town damaged, and almost all bridges had collapsed. Many people were believed to be under the debris.

Previous attempts by rescuers to reach the epicenter "by land, air and water" failed because of landslides, telecommunication breakdown and rain, an official with the Sichuan provincial relief headquarters said.
