Why we need to install a new version.

Jul 7th 2008, 08:05 PM 3 raters

No software is perfect. There are ways to do things in a program you might not think that someone else might find some way in it to do other things with it. Bad things that may, in its worst kind, execute arbitrary code on you computer, that you might not want to be executed. Like computer viruses, or spyware. Also, some ways things are solved, they might imply an issue, which might enable someone to circumvent some features or disable some crucial features of the software.
As you all know, the ICQ service works in a way where your client software communicates with a server. And that server with the client software on lots of other's computers all over the world. And sometimes, there might even be an issue with the software on that particular server. Something wrong, that isn't good. And that needs to be fixed. However, that fix for the server's software might cause old client software for your computer to be unable to properly communicate with the server. You might become unable to see another user's status or even to send them a message. Just because your version of the client software is old and does not work like the server anymore.

And it's not like a bad thing, we all just need to install updates and upgrades from time to time in order to stay current. To maintain our security we need updates, and those updates sometimes mean a big change, but they are not a bad thing. The updates only want you good.

Floating ICQ Contacts

Jul 6th 2008, 03:47 PM 0 raters

Didn’t you remember this cool feature in an old ICQ version, which enabled you to add floating contacts? And you missed it in the newer versions?

“Icon on Top (On)” - You can use this option with specific users on your Contact List, so that their names always appear on your screen even when the ICQ program is minimized.

Well, you can achieve a similar result, by using desktop shortcuts. :)

Therefore simply rightclick on your desktop. A context menu will open, letting you choose from various options. Here, choose New -> Shortcut.

A window will open letting you type in the location for the shortcut to lead to. Type in:

icq:send_message?uin=[your contact's ICQ#]

For the [your contacts ICQ#] you can type in a ICQ number, an AOL screenname, or even a phone number with the full country code.

When you’re done, click Next. You will now be asked for a name for your new shortcut. Here, type in your contacts name on your contact list, or if you want, even something completely different. You should use your contacts nickname, but it really doesn’t matter, it’s your choice, you know. ;)

When you’re done, click Finish.

Now, you’ve got a working shortcut on your desktop, which will, if you double click it, open the message window for the choosen contact. But, you know, this default web shortcut icon is not that good. So now, rightclick on your new shortcut and select Properties. A window will open, letting you choose different things. Here, click on Change Icon, and another window will open. Maybe a confirmation window will pop up, telling you an icon could not be found. Ignore it in this case and simply click OK.

Now we have this window, where we can choose from various default Windows icons, but that’s not really what we want. There is an input bar, where we will type in:

C:\Program Files\ICQ6\services\icqApp\ver1\theme\IMAGES\Common\IcqIcons\WindowsIcons\win-icon-message.png

Then we click on OK.

Note: This will only work with ICQ6. If you haven’t installed ICQ into C:\Program Files\ICQ6\ or if you are using a localized version of Windows XP, this directory might be different. You will have to replace that part of the file path with the path you have choosen while installing ICQ.

Blogging for what?

Mar 31st 2008, 06:36 PM 0 raters

Ok, wait, this is a blog, right? But, did you know… I am putting nothing on here.
No that's a lie… at least this is something. So what to blog about? Well, I couldn't figure, I think I'll just write some crap in here… but wait… checking Google gave too many results on crap blogs… hmmm…

So, now, what am I blogging here for? Well, I'd say, I'm wasting time, because I have, at least for the moment, got nothing better to do…
So what will be here? I think, after some waste of time thinking, I'll really just blog about myself and ICQ on this ICQ Blog. I checked up some blogs of other people to see what they are writing about, but aparently there wasn't anything which would really fit for me.
So my blog will not be:

  • Some information and news portal (I don't read and watch news… so why writing them?)
  • A reference for images (I have a gallery on my homepage…)
  • A diary (privacy, folks, privacy)
  • A library :D (wonder why some people do…)
  • A download portal (traffic is too expensive)
  • A collaboration (yeah, just me :P )
  • Everything else I forgot (not quite, though)

Maybe it'll be a bit funny and informative to read things here, but also it will require to be intelligent at some point.

Stay tuned, days will rock. So promise to check it out! ;)

PS: I'd wish for RSS syndication import over here so much. :'(

Also you may find my normal blog thing over here.
