A free site isn't the best way to go. Here is my first site.
http://www.geocities.com/karencharin0/There is an ad on the right side of the page, but you can close that box so
that you can see the whole site. The name doesn't do much
to let people know what your site is about and it won't do very well in search
engines. So I bought the domain name
www.Biblestudyresources.net.
and had my friend host it for me. I kept the first one because it has a cyber bot
that I am teaching to answer Bible questions. It doesn't get very much traffic so
I have a lot of time to teach Hal answers to questions. My second site has basically
the same front page, and then I added more pages. It gets about 8 people a day now.
I have two more free sites that I play around with, but you are limited as to how you
can use those sites. I have several more sites that I bought the domain name for and
also have my friend host for me,
www.dogfunny.net was the second one I made and it
is still growing. I get about 10-30 people a day there now.
I buy my domain names at go daddy, they will also host you for free with their ad at the
top. So I have one site hosted with them for free but it does have my domain name.
www.pictureofworldmap.net
I have several domain names that I don't have anything up yet, I"m still just planning them.
When I found out about buying domain names, I didn't realize how long it was going to take
me to actually build the sites and how much time I would be putting in on rebuilding pages
for the sites I already had up.
I thought my sites looked a certain way, then found out if I looked at them with a different
screen resolution set, and in different browsers the pages looked different. On dogfunny, I
just got done rebuilding the page on dog toys. When I built it originally I used different tables
for different dog toys, I had 4 sections of tables, The pages looked fine in my MSN explorer
browser but when I looked at them with Internet explorer browser I seen that the tables were
out of alignment. The first table looked ok, but you had to scroll to the right to see the next
table then more to the right to see the next table..... I had no idea it looked like that in a different
browser. Then I looked at them in the netscape browser. They were all lined up ok, but I had
one or two or three.... page length between the tables that were just blank space people had
to scroll down in order to see the next group of toys....... ( Might be a big reason why I haven't
made many sales LOL) but I'm learning from my mistakes and I'm working on correcting them.
I got the dog toys page rebuilt and published with just using one table for all the toy ads.And I'm
working on the dog clothes page now. They were the two worse pages when I looked at them
in different browsers.
I also found out that if you use a picture that is too wide for the column that it stretches out the
column and then people have to scroll back and forth to see the whole thing. So now I'm making
the pictures smaller so that they fit better in the columns. I was looking at my pages with my
computer set at the highest resolution and didn't realize that the pictures were too big when viewed
with the normal middle setting for resolution.
I will probably start out my other sites on the free go daddy hosting, then when they start getting
noticed in the search engines I'll move them to the paid hosting so that I can just use my own
ads. Except I did just buy a new domain name the other day
YourForumTopic.com.... it's my first
.com name !!!!! and it will be my first forum. I will start that one out on the paid hosting I think it would
be hard to move a whole forum because of all the pages. I want to use the forum site as a forum for
all my web sites, so there will be a wide variety of subjects in this forum to start out with, then I thought
I would ad new topics that people suggest. Like if they have a site about shoes, they can start a topic
for their site and keep it updated with things going on at their site. I don't know when I'll get it started
up though, I'm still trying to decide what script I want to use for it.
