You can send a short message to any ICQ user regardless of whether the user is online at the
time of sending. Your message is sent even if the recipient is offline. For more info, see: http://www.icq.com/faq/offlinemsg.html
To send a message:
- Click on the user you wish to contact.
- Choose Send Message from the user menu that opens.
- Type the message.
- Choose the mode or modes (ICQ, SMS, E-mail) that you want to send your message in, by checking the box at the bottom of the box.
- Click on Send to send the message.
The text you typed will automatically move to the upper box:
Click the Msg mode icon to change the message window display mode.
Each time you press this icon the window switches between Single Message Mode and Split Message Mode.
While you type your message you will hear the typing machine sounds.
To disable this option:
Click on the Sound button next to the character count on the
Send Message dialog.
The Disabled Sound button will indicate that the sound has been turned off.
Spell checker, smiles & emotions!
Click to check the spelling of your message.
Click to insert a smiley to your message from the various smiley options.
You can set the font, font color and background of your
Send Message dialog:
Click and choose the font type and color you like best from the window that appears.
Click and select the background color you wish to appear on your Send Message dialog.
All your messages will now appear according to the new settings and will be displayed
on your friend's ICQ when they receive your messages.
Click to switch viewing text and font as set by users or overriding the settings and viewing
the text using the default settings.
Remember that messages sent to offline users
are limited to 450 characters.
If you exceed this limit, a dialog pops-up enabling you to edit the
message.

Sending a Message to Multiple Recipients
- Click one of the users you wish to contact.
- Choose Send Message from the list.
- Click Msg Mode and ensure you see the Single Message Mode Window.
- Type in your message.
- Click the
Multiple Recipients icon at the top right corner of the Message window.
Your Contact List will appear on the right.
- Choose the additional users to whom you wish to send the message.
- Click Send to send the message.
Receiving Messages
When you are online and a message is sent to you (or was sent to you when you were
offline), a flashing message icon
will appear next to the name of the user who sent
it. If your ICQ window is closed, a message icon will flash in place of the ICQ
flower in the system tray. To read your message:
- Double-click on the user. The window that opens depends if you are in Single or Multiple Message mode.
If you are in Split Mode, the same window appears as above. If not, the window appears with the following options:
- Reply: Opens a new message dialogue for you to write a response.
- Forward: Sends the message on to another user of your choice.

The
History icon on the top right hand corner of the message box,
enables you to view the message correspondence between the sender and you.
- More Functions - Lets you print the message.
- Click on Read Next if there are more messages waiting for you.
