ICQ 4 Tour - Add Users

Welcome to the ICQ 4 Tour!
The new ICQ 4 offers you an abundance of cool new features and the ability to update and choose your favorites at any time. If you’ve downloaded ICQ for the first time, the first step you should take is adding friends to your contact list.

This is your ICQ Contact List, your directory of friends who have registered with ICQ. When you have users on your Contact List, people that are online are listed before those that are offline. You can identify the status of each contact by the color of your friend's nickname (online users are blue, offline users are red), and by the icon located next to it.

The first step to take with ICQ is to add users to your Contact List:

Finding and Adding Users

There are two ways to find users in ICQ: Add/Invite Users and People Search. If you haven't added any users to your ICQ Contact List, you'll see a link at the top telling you to click the Add button to start finding friends:

You can use this search option to add users to your ICQ Contact List.

From the Main menu, click Add / Invite Users. Choose Find User -> Add to List to display the Add/Invite Users tab of the ICQ Global Directory Search Engine.

You can search for ICQ users by:
ICQ Number - If you know the user's ICQ number, use this field to conduct the search. You can enter the ICQ number using spaces. For example, 123 456 789.
Email - Search for an ICQ user by email address.
Nickname, First or Last name - Search for users according to these parameters.
Add AOL Screen Name - Add AOL, AIM users to your Contact List by entering an AOL, AIM user name and clicking Add.

Note: In this window, you can search by one criteria at a time. If you don't know who you are looking for, or would like to use more than one search category, use the ICQ People Search tab.

You can use this type of search to retrieve more specific results than when using Add/Invite Users. This is useful when you aren't searching for a specific person, but do know the type of user you want to meet.

The fields you can use to search include:

Names (first, last, and nickname)
Age
Location
Gender
Language

Search Tip: If you wish, in the Keyword field, you can also search with your own search criteria using keywords. If you check the Search keyword also in Google checkbox, you can even use these criteria in the Google Internet search engine! For example, you could search for males in Brazil between the ages of 40-49 who like martial arts and speak English. With the Online Only checkbox, you can also ensure the results contain only online users.

If your friends are not yet members of ICQ, you can invite them to join. Until then, you can add them to your list of possible future ICQ users. The email address you entered will go in your Contact List under Future Users Watch. The ICQ service will inform you when your friend joins the ICQ Network.

People Search
