How to Use ICQ Behind a Firewall?
Here you may find out all there is to know about using ICQ behind firewalls and how to configure ICQ to work with various firewall settings.

 What is a firewall?

A firewall is a security system, designed to prevent unauthorized access to a private or local network. The system can either be a hardware firewall or a software firewall, or a combination of both. This following information concerns software firewalls.
The general use of firewalls on the Internet is to prevent Internet users from accessing local networks or Intranets. What are of concern to us here are Proxy Servers, Socks.x and HTTPS.

Why does a firewall interfere with the use of ICQ?

A firewall, in a way is like the doorkeeper of a local pub. If you don't have your I.D. on you, or if for some reason you do not qualify to enter, the doorkeeper will not permit you to enter. In some extreme cases these doorkeepers will not let you out, or at least give you a hard time before they finally let you out. This is what happens to ICQ when trying to send, or receive messages.
The firewall keeps checking the packets coming in and going out, and if the packets do not qualify- they will never get to their destination.

Proxy server: Checks and relays all messages entering and leaving the Network. The proxy server is designed to hide the true network address.

Socks: HTTPS protocols for handling TCP traffic through a proxy server. It can be used with just about any TCP application, including Web browsers.
