ICQ enables you to find random online ICQ users to chat with, and make yourself available for
chat with random ICQ users:
Make Yourself Available
- Click the Status button on the ICQ window. This is the button at the bottom of the window
that displays your present status such as Online or N/A.
- Select Chat With A Friend.
The menu that appears offers you four options:
Find a Random Chat Partner
- Click the Status button.
- Select Chat with a Friend.
- Choose Find a Chat Partner. The Chat with a Friend window appears with the
Finding tab displayed.
- Click the drop-down menu of chat groups, and select the chat group you would like to join.
- Click Find an Online Chat Friend.
The dialog retrieves the details of your random chat friend.
If you would like to chat with this friend you have the following options available at the bottom of the window:
- Request Chat
- Send Message
- Send URL
If you would like to find someone else to chat with, simply click the Find an Online Chat Friend
button again.

Available to Chat with a Friend
Choosing this option will mark you in the ICQ servers as "ICQ user available for random chat".
This will enable other ICQ users searching for a random chat partner to find you through the ICQ servers.
Chat with a Friend Settings
This tab enables you to insert details of your interests. For example, if you are interested in
extraterrestrials and you state this in your interest details, another ICQ user who shares your
interest in will be able to find you and chat with you. To configure your settings:
- Click the Status button.
- Select Chat with a Friend.
- Click Chat with a Friend Settings.
A dialog will appear with the Details tab.
- Enter your personal details.
- Check the box marked I want to be available chat with a friend
- Select a chat category from the drop-down menu.
- Click Save.
Your details are now saved so the next time you choose to be available for random chat
you will not need to fill in your interest details again.
If you wish to change your details simply follow these steps again.
Alternative Methods to Access the Chat Window
- Click the Main button on the ICQ window.
- Select Add/Invite Users.
A menu is displayed.
- Choose Chat with a Friend
The Chat with a Friend dialog will open.
- Click Find an Online Chat Friend. When you get the results initiate a chat.
Another way is this:
- Click on the Add Button on the ICQ window.
A Add/Invite Users to your list dialog is displayed.
- Select Chat with a Friend
The Chat with a Friend dialog will open.
- Click Find an Online Chat Friend. When you get the results initiate a chat.
