Preferences

The Owner Preferences window gives you options that enable you to customize how ICQ works.

You do not need to configure these preferences in order for most features to work. However, as you get to know ICQ, you might find that customizing ICQ features will enhance your enjoyment of the program.

  1. Click the Main button.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Click on one of the topics on the left column of the Preferences window and select your choices for that area on the right pane.

The following Preferences topics may be configured:
    • Contact List - lets you customize the appearance and settings of your Contact List.
    • Miscellaneous - lets you select how to access the drop-down menu and whether to open the welcome screen.
    • Connections - lets you specify the type of Internet connection, the ICQ server for connection, firewalls settings and proxy details.
    • Alerts and Notifications - lets you specify what happens when incoming events occur.
    • Edit Launch List - automatically launches the applications you set to start when connection to the Internet is detected.
    • ICQ Email Import - lets you add friends to your Contact List by searching for e-mail addresses in your e-mail program(s) address books on your computer.

Contact List

This window lets you customize the appearance and settings of your Contact List.

Preferences

  • Check the Popup Contact List upon incoming event to set your Contact List to automatically open (if it was minimized) upon receipt of an incoming event.
  • Check the Global online alert by: to receive an alert when a user comes online. Then check Blink to receive a flashing user name alert and/or Sound to receive a sound alert.

Miscellaneous Preferences

The preferences for Miscellaneous are:
  • Check the Show ICQ Welcome to enable ICQ announcements to be displayed upon start-up of the program.
  • Check the Access menus by left button to access the user menus for each user on your Contact List by using the left mouse button (this is the default).
Connections Preferences

The preferences for Connections are:
  • The General tab allows you to specify your Internet connection type.
  • The Server tab enables you to change the configurations of your ICQ server host and port.
  • The Firewall tab allows you to change your Proxy server settings if you are behind a Firewall. You may define more than one Proxy.
  • The User tab enables you change the incoming ports for communication with users that are behind a Firewall.

General Tab

Use this tab to specify the following features:
  • Check the Launch ICQ on startup to launch ICQ in standby mode when you start your computer, which will automatically launch ICQ when you connect to the Internet.
  • Check the Launch default Web browser when connection is detected from the Intermet to automatically launch your Web browser upon connection to ICQ or to the Internet. This option is only available for modem connections.
  • Check the Automatically activate standby mode upon disconnection from the Internet to put ICQ in standby mode so that ICQ is launched upon connection to the Internet. This option is only available for modem connections.
If you've disconnected from the Internet and closed ICQ, once you re-connect to the Internet, this option will launch ICQ.
  • Choose from the IP radio buttons to determine if ICQ will automatically find your IP address, or if it always uses the internal or external IP address.
Server Tab

Use this tab to configure your server, or have ICQ configure it for you. You can also select if you are using ICQ behind a firewall. Checking the Keep Connection Alive checkbox will maintain your connection to the server.

Firewall Tab

In this tab, you can define your proxy server settings, and, if you wish, define more than one proxy.

User Tab

You can use this tab to define special proxy settings for peer-to-peer connections, or allow ICQ to use the server's proxy settings.

Alerts and Notifications

This enables you to specify parameters regarding sending or receiving messages, such as playing a sound upon receipt of an event, or logging your event history. If you choose to use it, event history is maintained on your machine.

Edit Launch List

Set the applications you wish to automatically launch when you connect to the Internet.
  1. Click the Add button to select an application
  2. Click the OK button to save your changes, or click the Cancel button to exit the window without saving your changes.
ICQ Email Import

This option enables you to schedule periodic checks to search for friends in the address book (or books) of the e-mail program(s) installed on your computer, compare them with the ICQ database and add them to your Contact List.

Note: This feature works only with Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora and Netscape Navigator.
