- What is IRC & IrCQ-Net?
IrCQ-Net (ICQ on the IRC Network) is available on or through http://www.icq.com/ircqnet or http://ircqnet.icq.com. IrCQ-Net provides a way of communicating in real time with people from all over the world. It consists of various "networks" (or "nets") of ICQ servers, machines that allow users to connect to IRC. The point of IRC is to chat. You may join in public discussions in a room or talk privately to one person at a time. IrCQ-Net is a multi-user, multi-room chatting system. Imagine sitting in front of your computer and "talking" through typed messages with either one person or many other people from all over the Internet, all in real time! Best of all, once you begin chatting in IrCQ-Net you will find that it's lots of fun.
Once connected to an IrCQ-Net room, you can randomly join one or more "rooms" and converse with other visitors there. On IrCQ-Net, there are often many different chat rooms, each devoted to a different topic. Conversations may be public (where everyone in a room can see what you type) or private (messages between only two people, who may or may not be in the same room). IrCQ-Net is not a "game", and it is highly recommend you treat people you meet on IrCQ-Net with the same courtesy as if you were talking in person or on the phone.
Room names usually begin with a #, as in #Romance. The same rooms are shared among all IrCQ-Net users on the same net. Each user is known on IrCQ-Net by his "nickname" such as "Smartgal" or "FunGuy" or he/she my insert their ICQ#. To avoid conflicts with other users, it is suggested to use a nickname that is not too common, e.g. "John" is a poor choice.
- Talking, and entering commands
Commands and text are typed in the same chat text field. By default, commands begin with the character /. It is, highly recommended that you learn to type in the basic IrCQ-Net commands. This will greatly enhance your efficiency and enjoyment of the program. When entering commands, pay close attention to spacing and capitalization.
