ICQ handles almost all incoming and outgoing messages in one window, called the message window.
This window contains various controls that are common to all ICQ message types, as well as a central pane
which is specific to the message you want to send or read.
The User Information Pane
The top part of the window contains essential details about the contact which is associated with
the current message. In addition to ICQ#, name and email, you can see the time the message was sent,
as well as the current ICQ status of the contact.
Message Controls
At the bottom of the message window, you have several controls that are common to all message types.
The Speak button
activates the Macintosh Text-to-Speech system, available on most Macintosh computers.
Press this button once to make your Mac speak out the current message (or the current text selection).
To stop the speech process, press the button again.
For users who are members of your Contact
List, this button opens the message history window - an archive of messages exchanged between you and the contact of the message.
If the current message belongs to an ICQ user
not on your Contact List, use this button to add that user.
This button controls the Mac/PC
translation state of the current message. Because of differences in font standards between MacOS and Windows,
certain characters sent from one system may appear altered on the other system. The Mac/PC translation feature
corrects this in many situations.
If you want to send your message
to several recipients, use the multi-recipient control. This control opens a list of additional ICQ users,
and ICQ sends your message to all the users you select from this list. Note that some ICQ messages,
such as file transfer, SMS or chat, cannot be sent to more than one ICQ user.
Tip: to quickly add a recipient to an outgoing message, drag that recipient from your Contact
List into the top part of the message window.
