Running ICQ 3.4X on your Mac for the first time
If you have ICQ user preferences created by ICQ for Mac version 2.5 or higher,
then ICQ will try to use those. If such preferences are not found, ICQ will offer you three easy
ways to register an ICQ number on your Mac:
The ICQ Registration Wizard
- New ICQ Number: The ICQ Registration Wizard will be launched.
- Existing ICQ Number: You may enter a previously registered ICQ number,
along with its password. If the servers authenticates your number and password, this ICQ number will
be installed on your Mac.
If you have previously used this ICQ number with an ICQ client that supports the Contact List on Server feature,
your Contact List will be automatically retrieved from the server and made available to you.
See the Contact List on Server help page for more details.
- Import old ICQ settings: ICQ will run the Settings Importer for you
and try to automatically locate and copy your settings from ICQ versions 2.0 and below.
You can always direct the importer to import a specific ICQ folder. The previous settings are copied,
but they are neither modified nor deleted. Note that the Settings Importer is a separate application
which you may run at any time.
Registration to ICQ
ICQ registration is quick and simple. It offers you step by step instructions, guiding you through the entire
registration process. After registering with the ICQ Network, you will receive an ICQ#.
This number identifies you as a registered ICQ user. You can publish your ICQ# on your Web site or business card
so that other ICQ users can easily identify and contact you. You may also register on another computer under
the same ICQ#. In addition, you may register on a computer where other ICQ users are registered.
There is no limit to the number of users that may register on the same computer.
Before you begin ICQ registration, make sure you are connected to the Internet.
The registration wizard allows you to register a new ICQ#, or to install a previously registered ICQ#.
If you wish to register a new ICQ number, you can provide any of the following details:
- Nickname, first name, last name - These details will enable your friends to
look you up in the ICQ user directories according to your name.
- Email - Enables your friends to look you up in the ICQ user directories
according to your Email address. In addition, the Email address you provide can be used in certain cases
for password retrieval purposes.
Note: The password retrieval service may be of help only in certain cases
and only using an Email address/es that was/were entered in the Email field of the ICQ number User Details.
For more information about the password retrieval service, please refer to http://www.icq.com/password.
- Password - Please make sure you remember your password.
Your ICQ may not be operable without it ! If you do not want to be asked to enter your password every
time you start an ICQ session, check the auto-save password box. See below for more detailed information.
- Authorization - Select whether or not your authorization is required when other
users want to add you to their Contact List.
- Additional Information -- You may also choose to add some more information
about yourself, such as city, country, state, age, gender etc. These details will make it easier for your
friends around the world to find you on ICQ and communicate with you.
Note: Providing any information about yourself on ICQ is voluntary.
The more information you provide about yourself the easier it will be for your friends to locate
you and communicate with you. Information you do provide will be published on ICQ directories and will
be visible to ICQ & Internet users.
